At specific times in Japan's history horses gained different roles depending on the development of society. For example during the Heian period they were primarily used for horse breeding (basan 馬産) and for racing (keiba 競馬) while in Kamakura period they were vital for transportation (unyu 運輸) and farming tasks ( nōkō 農耕 ).
