Erythrocytes are responsible for transport and exchange of O2 and CO 2 between the lungs and other tissues. Erythrocyte oxygenation in lung capillaries facilitates CO 2 unloading causing shrinkage and ATP release activating endothelial cells to synthesize nitric oxide (NO) which complexes with hemoglobin.
An erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) is a type of blood test that measures how quickly erythrocytes (red blood cells) settle at the bottom of a test tube that contains a blood sample. Normally red blood cells settle relatively slowly. A faster-than-normal rate may indicate inflammation in the body.
