Tropical cyclones typically form over large bodies of relatively warm water. They derive their energy through the evaporation of water from the ocean surface which ultimately recondenses into clouds and rain when moist air rises and cools to saturation.

Tropical cyclones hurricanes or typhoons form when convection causes warm moist air above the ocean to rise. They begin as a group of storms when the water gets as hot as 80 °F (27 °C) or hotter. The Coriolis effect made by the Earth's rotation causes the winds to rotate. Warm air rises quickly.

Tropical cyclones can be categorized by intensity. Tropical storms have one-minute maximum sustained winds of at least 39 mph (34 knots 17 m/s 63 km/h) while hurricanes have one-minute maximum sustained winds exceeding 74 mph (64 knots 33 m/s 119 km/h). Most North Atlantic tropical storms and hurricanes form between June 1 and November 30.
